Take a Hike

For nature-lovers looking for a quick stroll and some fresh air, try Markham Nature Park. The park is open daily from dawn until dusk, and it’s free for visitors. The park’s Tree Walk is a lovely way to spend a hot summer afternoon while viewing 45 different types of trees and hundreds of different flowers, succulents, grasses, bushes and herbs. This impressive space is filled with color and is a beautiful area right in the heart of Concord.

Lace up your walking shoes and hit the pavement on the Contra Costa Canal Trail. This is one of the more popular trails in Concord as it follows a flowing canal and intersects with four parks and numerous hiking trails. Bicyclists, pedestrians and equestrians are allowed on this path, so be cautious and respectful of your fellow trail users. The trail is free to use and is accessible during daylight hours.

For a more challenging walk with some of the most spectacular views in the East Bay, look no further than Mount Diablo State Park. While there are several hiking trails, a local favorite is The Grand Loop Trail (also known as the Summit Loop Hike). This 6.5-mile loop gives incredible views of the beautiful region. Be sure to check out the free, downloadable audio tour, so you can get a quick history lesson on the area while you take in the fresh mountain air.
